The 20-49 Motor Club was established in 1967, with its base in Stamford, Lincolnshire.
The Club was conceived by a local individual who recognized the need for an organization that catered to enthusiasts of vintage vehicles. Early Club records reveal that considerable thought went into selecting a fitting name, and we can now appreciate that the decision to choose “motor” rather than “car” has allowed the Club to remain inclusive.
Initially, the Club was named The 30-49 Motor Club, to avoid conflicting with existing vintage car clubs, and because a 1949 vehicle would have been just eighteen years old—a fairly modern vehicle in 1967. However, when the local branch of the VSCC dissolved in 1971, its members sought a new community where they could meet others with similar interests. To accommodate these individuals, whose cars were considered “too old” for the original club, the name was quickly changed to “20-49” to include vintage vehicles from earlier years.
More than forty years later, the Club’s scope has expanded. Our oldest vehicle is now an 1899 Locomobile steam car, while the more recent vehicles generally fall within the DVLA's “Historic Vehicle” tax classification, currently covering vehicles that are at least forty years old.
Although the majority of our “motors” are cars, we also take pride in our diverse collection, which includes light vans, heavy commercial vehicles, buses, coaches, fire engines, military vehicles, tractors, and steam traction engines. Since collectors often own more than one vehicle, we believe the total number of vehicles in the Club likely ranges from 450 to 500 fascinating vintage machines.
