Sometime in 1985, a group of about 26 like-minded classic car enthusiasts came together to form the North Devon Sports & Classic Car Club (NDSCCC). Among the founding members, Chris Arscott and John Lain remain active in the club to this day.
The club’s journey began with an advertisement in a local North Devon newspaper, inviting classic car enthusiasts to attend an inaugural meeting in a Bideford hotel. Initially, members met informally, but over time, monthly lunch gatherings became the norm. They also began participating in three to four car runs each year and showcasing their vehicles at a few annual events.
From the start, the club embraced a welcoming attitude—perfection was never a requirement. Whether it was a pristine classic or a rust-covered Hillman, every vehicle was someone’s pride and joy. This inclusive spirit remains a core principle of the club.
Helping each other has always been at the heart of NDSCCC. If a member faced car troubles, others were quick to lend a hand. Today, many members possess extensive automotive knowledge and are always willing to offer support and advice.
Now, nearly 40 years later, the club has grown to over 200 members, with an incredible variety of classic and sports cars. From March to November, the club organizes a full calendar of events, including car runs, static displays, and attendance at shows hosted by other clubs. Everyone has their favorite events, ensuring there’s something for every enthusiast.
To stay connected over the winter months, a committee member arranges monthly breakfast meets at various venues across North Devon and beyond, giving members a chance to catch up until the new season begins.
